Vanessa is the name of the town of Avanos in the ancient times, thatlies 18km to the northeast of Nevsehir. The main activity inthe town is pottery, a craft dating back to the Hittite period. The red claywhich is worked by local craftsmen comes from the residue in the Redriver.
On the banks of the Redriver, a marble sarcophagus was found in a Romannecropolis. It is particularly interesting as it is the first sarcophagus tohave been found in the area. The sacrophagus was discoverd in 1971, butunfortunately someone had already opened the gable roof lid and stolen thetreasures. After pathological and paleonthropological tests on the the body andsarcophagus it has been established that the body belonged to a woman, whosehair was dyed with henna.
